Apple is currently the leader in mobile devices, including the various iterations of the iPhone and iPad. However, HP and Motorola are breathing down Apple's neck and may soon be contenders for first place, says analysts.
Displaysearch has just released a study that claims Apple could lose the top position as the world's largest manufacturer of mobile devices. During the fourth quarter of last year, Apple shipped a total of 10.2 million units of the various iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch variants and MacBooks.
Apple's sales figures during the last quarter of 2010 placed it at number one in the category. The same study shows that Apple's position is now threatened by both HP and Motorola. Not least because of the great interest surrounding Motorola's upcoming Xoom tablet. HP's upcoming Touchpad tablet has been called an "iPad-killer" by some, but Apple fans would no doubt disagree on that point.
HP, which ended up in second place regarding the number of mobile devices sold during last year's final quarter, has a chance to go after Apple's lead according to Displaysearch. The five largest manufacturers accounted for 65 percent of all sales of mobile units in the same period and the total amount of shipments were 59.6 million units.
